Week 1 is done! Everyone has survived. And, there was only minor deviations. Coffee shops are my personal downfall. But I only went 1 time so that is an improvement. I will keep working on it.
I decided to try the order online and pick up at the store option. Our local Walmart and King Soopers both offer this option. It was a fantastic way to avoid any impulse shopping, or drooling at the ice cream freezer.
I purchased all the items on the following lists: Protein, Vegetables, Fresh Herbs and Other. On the Pantry list I purchased Nut butter (cashew) and Tomato sauce (organic). I had all the other ingredients on hand. The weekly shopping list made it so easy. The one thing I would encourage you to do is watch for “snack” items to go on sale. Olives, nuts, jerky can be expensive items, but if you look ahead for sales you can really save on these items.
King Soopers: I put in all the items with the King Soopers online buy. I was pleasantly surprised to see how many organic meats, vegetables, fruits and dry good items they had. Sometimes when I am in the store I am in such a hurry or distracted I do not notice the amounts of organic products available. I was able to get all the meats, almost all of the fruits and vegetables organic. I did organic when it was available. The total cost for week 1 at King Soopers was $193.94 But keep in mind that was almost everything organic.
Walmart: They also had a lot more organic items that I thought they carried. It was rather a shock. I could not get all the meats organic, but chose the healthiest options they had. I also chose organic fruits and vegetables when it was an option and it was a bit more than half. Imagine my surprise when my total Walmart bill was $242.23!
It is possible that many of the items I purchased from King Soopers were on sale. However, it was a pretty significant gap in costs. I will compare them again in week 2. I think it is possible to do this much cheaper if you are willing to go to a couple of different stores. Our local Sprouts still has some of the best prices on organic produce.
Lets get down to the nitty gritty. And by gritty, I mean the white stuff-SUGAR! I had horrible sugar cravings this week. I would not have said that I was a sugaraholic but I sure like the stuff. Sugar is a drug for me.
I totally needed it. Ugh. I am right there with you Spongebob.
The recipes are pretty good and very easy to make. The whole smoothie for breakfast thing just does not work for me. I am pretty much hungry again in an hour. I did try to drink a smoothie before going to do my morning workout and that was good! I usually have a Larabar, some nuts or an egg after my workout. The whole sugar detox was hard enough without adding hunger on top of it all.
There are 2 items in the menu this week that my family will not eat. Zucchini Noodles and “spaghetti” made from spaghetti squash. There is a deep zucchini aversion here. In the past I baked it into cake and received a lukewarm reception. Chocolate Cake! I love my family and harmony at the dinner table, so zucchini is pretty much off the Gengler menu. We had omelettes instead. Good old reliable omelettes.
I am excited to see what week 2 brings.
